Health Data Spaces in Canada the EU (2024 – Present)
Health data spaces are technical infrastructures and governance arrangements that aim to promote health data access and use. The scale of these platforms, and the sensitivity of health as a domain of individual and collective practice, raise urgent questions for responsible governance. This has been the focus of my postdoctoral work since 2024.
Trust and AI for Health (2024 – Present)
Trust is increasingly privileged as an essential consideration in AI development and use, especially in health care settings. Since 2024 I have supported two working groups convened at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society at the University of Toronto, which examined trust from a multi-disciplinary perspective.
Responsible Development of an AI-Enabled Smart Physiotherapy Monitoring System (2021 – 2024)
This 3-year embedded ethics and policy study occurred alongside and informed the development and implementation of a health AI technology undergoing commercialization through a start-up.
A Sociotechnical AI Impact Assessment for Healthcare (2023)
As applications of AI in health care continue to grow, ensuring responsible and trustworthy design, development, and use that balances risks with public value will be essential. This algorithmic impact assessment (AIA) was developed to address the potential impacts of AI in a more expansive manner, focusing specifically on health systems.
Co-Design of Smart Technologies for Health Care (2018 – 2020)
This project was carried out as part of my master’s thesis and involved a review of the research literature in order to examine the extent to which co-design as commonly conceptualized is capable of addressing the range of normative issues raised by the digitalization of health.
Design Ethics and AI for Health (2019)
As part of the Joint Centre for Bioethics Scholars Program in AI Ethics and Health, this project consisted of a structured review and critique of ethics and values in design (E+VID) literature, classifying approaches according to their positions on normative strength and views regarding designer agency.
